Fears over dodgy batteries and chargers have prompted Amazon to pull hoverboards from its virtual shelves
Online retailer Amazon appears to have suspended sales of "hoverboards" on its US and UK sites, amid fears that they are unsafe for use.
The gadgets - which don't actually hover but propel riders around on two wheels at speeds of up to 15mph - have been pegged as one of the most popular tech gifts this Christmas.
However, Trading Standards has issued warnings that counterfeit hoverboards are being imported into the country to take advantage of the Christmas.
Authorities in the UK have seized more than 15,000 of them at ports and airports in ecent weeks. These fake boards have been deemed a hazard after several caught fire while they were charging.
One man described how the £300 hoverboard he had bought for his grandchildren fizzed "like a firework" before detonating like a bomb in his three bed semi in Deal Kent.
Another recounted how his hoverboard suddenly exploded and caught fire beneath his feet as he took it for a spin outside his home in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Amazon has reportedly suspended sales of the devices and written to hoverboard manufacturers, asking them to prove that they are safe.
One company, called Swegway, which has had its product pulled from the site, told technology site The Verge that Amazon's concerns are connected to the batteries and charger.
"Amazon just sent out a notice to all hoverboard sellers to 'provide documentation demonstrating that all hoverboards you list are compliant with applicable safety standards, including UN 38.3 (battery), UL 1642 (battery), and UL 60950-1 (charger)'."
Amazon has been contacted by Mirror Online but is yet to comment on the decision.
Concerns around hoverboards go beyond the risk of a potentially fiery end. Last week, a 15-year-old boy was tragically killed after being hit by a bus in north west London while riding a hoverboard.
A man also used a hoverboard to steal a crate of Lucozade from a Co-op supermarket in Mitcham, leading to fears that they could be used for further crime.
The government has now banned people from riding hoverboards on pavements or the road. Those who ignore the rules could be subject to traffic fines.
